If you only ever build one skincare habit, make it this one. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the most-studied, best-evidenced thing you can do for how your skin ages — and it costs about $10–15 a tube.
The reason is simple: the sun is the single biggest controllable cause of wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging skin. Dermatologists call sun-driven aging "photoaging," and it's generally estimated to account for the large majority of how aged facial skin looks over time — more than your genes. UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin (the proteins that keep skin firm and springy) and triggers uneven pigment. The good news: the part driven by sun is the part you can do something about.
What the evidence actually shows
This isn't a marketing claim. In a four-year Australian randomized trial, adults assigned to apply sunscreen daily showed no detectable increase in skin aging over the study, while the group using it at their own discretion did. The daily-use group's skin was measurably more resilient at the end.
Separately, regular sunscreen users in long-term trials have shown lower rates of some skin cancers. So this one habit is doing two jobs at once — the cosmetic one you can see, and a health one you can't.
The honest caveat: most of the strong evidence is about preventing further damage, not reversing what's already there. Sunscreen is insurance, not a repair tool — which is exactly why starting today, at any age, is worth it. The damage you don't accumulate is the win.
How to actually do it
The science is the easy part. The habit is where people fall down — so keep it stupidly simple:
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, on your face every morning — rain, shine, or working-from-home by a window. UV gets through cloud and glass.
- Use enough. Most people apply a quarter to half of what sunscreen is tested at, so real-world protection lands well below the label number. Aim for about two finger-lengths for face and neck.
- Don't forget neck, ears, and the backs of your hands — the places that quietly give away sun damage.
- Reapply roughly every two hours when you're outdoors for a stretch. Keep a spare in your bag.
- Make it automatic. Leave the tube next to your toothbrush and put it on right after you brush. That's the whole habit.
One more reassuring note on cost: drugstore sunscreen is held to the same regulatory standard as luxury brands. A $12 tube you actually use beats a $60 one you ration. Applying enough of an SPF 30 beats a thin, skipped layer of SPF 50.
